Sports is among the most celebrated events in the United States. From the Olympics to world championships of individual sporting events, the US gives a good game or, if not, gets a medal.

This is why the country is always included among the top list of nations that stand out in sports. One of the reasons for this sports supremacy is how even within the country, every state is competitive enough to produce and train world-class athletes.

Take Florida, for example. This state has produced a long list list of elite athletes and champions that contributed a lot to the country’s sports scene.

1. Deion Sanders

Deion Luwynn Sanders Sr, with the nicknames Lil Nicky, Prime Time, and Neon Deion, is one of the most celebrated American athletes. He played in the country’s most betted on sports baseball and gridiron football. He was the only one who was able to play in both a Super Bowl and world series.

Sander is also a National Football League (NFL) player for 14 seasons for various teams, as well as a baseball outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 9 seasons. As mentioned earlier, he’s won 2 Super Bowl titles and made an appearance in the World Series in 1992.

Sanders is also a sports analyst, sprinter, and a football coach.

2. Cris Collinsworth

Anthony Cris Collinsworth was a former professional player of American Football and is currently a TV sportscaster for NBC, Showtime, and the NFL Network.

Collinsworth was a wide receiver in the league for 8 seasons, playing for the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1980s. His sports career began in High School and continued to college where his years as a college football player at Florida State University paved a way for his professional career and was acknowledged as an All-American.

3. Dwayne Wade

Dwayne Tyrone Wade Jr. is probably one of the most popular NBA players. He spent most of his 16-year NBA career playing for the Miami Heat.

4. Doris Hart

Not many people may know Doris Hart today but she was also one of the most valuable sports and Tennis icons for the state of Florida. She was a professional tennis player in the 1940s until the first half of the 1950s.

Doris Hart was ranked as the no. 1 female tennis player in 1951. She’s the fourth person (and the second woman) to win singles in a Career Grand Slam.

5. Bob Hayes

Robert Lee “Bullet Bob” Hayes was an American Olympic gold medalist and an American football wide receiver in the NFL. He’s the only athlete to win both Olympic gold and a Super Bowl ring. Hayes holds 2 Olympic medals to add up to his many accomplishments.

Bob Hayes was also inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.

6. Steve Carlton

Steven Norman “Lefty” Carlton was a former professional baseball player who played MLB as a left-handed pitcher for various teams from 1965 to 1988. Although he was mostly notable as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies where he won 4 CY Young Awards, as well as in the World Series in 1980.

He was born and raised in Miami, Florida where he also began his early sports career.

7. Chris Evert

Chrisitne Marie Evert is another amazing female tennis player from 1979 to 1987 who was the former world no. 1 tennis player. Some of the highlights of her career include winning 18 Grand Slam singles championships and 3 in doubles.

Chris Evert was the year-end world no. 1 singles player in the years 1974-1978 and 1980-1981. She won an overall 157 singles titles and 32 doubles.

8. Emmitt Smith

Emmitt James Smith III was a former professional football player who played for the NFL for 15 seasons in the 1990s and 2000s. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys and the league’s all-time leading rusher.

He grew up in Florida and was the second-leading rusher in the history of American high school football while he played for Escambia High School. Today, it is understood that Emmitt is a businessman investing in various ventures.

9. Deacon Jones

David “Deacon” Jones was a defensive end player in the NFL. He played for the Los Angeles Rams, Washington Redskins, and San Diego Chargers. Jones was inducted in the 1980’s Pro Football Hall of Fame. Deacon was born and raised in Florida where his early sports career began.

10. Rowdy Gaines

Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines was a former competitive swimmer , three-time Olympic gold medalist, and a US Olympic Hall of Fame member, as well as an International Swimming Hall of Fame.

He is NBC’s swimming analyst.

Those are the 10 amazing athletes from Florida. You may also take note that the names above weren’t ranked and were laden in no particular order. There are more amazing athletes in the state than was mentioned.

It’s also worth noting that Florida athletes played a huge part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Just so to prove how big Florida contributes to the development of sports in the United States.
