Florida, Orange County COVID-19 cases continue to spike; Apopka gets new drive-thru testing site

Florida has the second-highest rate of new cases per capita, with just over 100 new cases per 100,000 people each day over the past week, behind only Louisiana

The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) reported a record number of COVID-19 cases on Friday - once again breaking the previous record of any other seven-day period during the pandemic.

According to the FDOH, there were 151,415 new COVID-19 cases over the past week for an average of 21,630 cases each day. The previous record high was just a week ago, on August 6th, with 134,711 total cases reported over seven days, for an average of 19,244 cases each day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Including the latest figures, the state has the second-highest rate of new cases per capita, with just over 100 new cases per 100,000 people each day over the past week, behind only Louisiana. The US overall is averaging more than 37 new cases per 100,000 people each day.

The FDOH also reported 286 new deaths this week and a new case positivity rate of 19.3%, according to the COVID-19 Weekly Situation Report.

Florida became the 23rd state to vaccinate at least 50% of its residents on Friday, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nationally, 50.5% of the US population is fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Just under 60% of those eligible to be vaccinated are fully vaccinated, and 61.5% of adults are fully vaccinated. Also according to CDC data, an average of 473,859 people are initiating vaccination each day in the US.

Orange County

The FDOH in Orange County reported 17 deaths since Monday, although two were in July and went unreported. According to Pino, there were 55 deaths in July and 18 in August. He also said 16 of the 17 deaths had underlying health conditions and that it was not yet known whether the 18th person had any underlying conditions. Seven of the recent deaths were fully vaccinated, and one was a county corrections officer, according to Pino.

According to the FDOH in Orange County, the 14-day rolling positivity rate is 20.07%.

New COVID-19 testing site opens in Apopka

A new drive-thru COVID-19 Testing Site is open at Edwards Field (239 East 1st Street, Apopka 32703). Appointments are available online. Drive-ups are also welcome.

This testing site, provided by Nomi Health, is open seven days a week from 8 AM to 6 PM. The test offered includes the PCR and Swab Rapid Antigen. No symptoms are necessary to visit this site.
