Wekiva Mustangs playing in prestigious Freedom Bowl on Labor Day weekend

Posted

It was a storybook season for the Wekiva Mustangs football team in 2017.

They rolled through early-season opponents with defensive intensity, posting three shutouts and allowed only two teams to eclipse 20 points in a game. They won the District 8A-4 title and defeated crosstown rival Apopka 22-14, both for the first time in school history. Their 12-2 record was the school's best, and three wins in the playoffs took them all the way to the state semifinals - the furthest journey they had ever taken into the postseason.

The Wekiva Mustangs posted a 12-2 record in 2017, including three wins in the playoffs, which took them all the way to the state semifinals - the furthest into a postseason journey they ever traveled before.

Now it's time for the sequel, which begins in an unlikely venue.

On September 1st, the Mustangs will travel to Suwanee, GA to take on the North Gwinnett (GA) Bulldogs in the Labor Day weekend Freedom Bowl.

The Freedom Bowl brings together 12 high profile programs from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Canada to compete in six games over three days in the heart of Atlanta’s championship-laden high school football powerhouses.

The first game will kick off on August 31st at 5 p.m. with the final game set for September 1st following an 8:30 p.m. contest.

FloSports, the innovator in live digital sports and original content, will provide live streaming coverage of all six games exclusively on FloFootball.com. Coverage begins with the weekend’s first matchup between the Daytona Beach Mainland High School Buccaneers and the Bob Jones Patriots from Madison, Alabama.

The Freedom Bowl platform aims to raise awareness for veterans, wounded servicemen and servicewomen and their families. Likewise, the event will educate and inspire participants on character, leadership and teamwork skills on and off the field.

In 2017, the North Gwinnett Bulldogs lost their opening game, but then ran off 14 straight wins including a 19-17 victory over Colquitt County High School in the Georgia state championship game.

Coaches and athletes will be afforded the opportunity to visit with former and current members of the U.S. Military who either currently serve or have served in leadership roles. Meanwhile, participants will have the chance to interact with both active and former service members who have been wounded while serving America in harm’s way.

Wekiva's opponent, the North Gwinnett Bulldogs, is coming off a storybook season of its own. In 2017 they lost their opening game, but then ran off 14 straight wins including a 19-17 victory over Colquitt County High School in the Georgia state championship game. According to the Freedom Bowl website, the Mustangs will face the Bulldogs in the tournament finale, September 1st at 8:30 PM.
