From Staff Reports
Week four in local high school football had only one game last week. The Wekiva Mustangs bounced back from two straight losses, while the 3-0 Apopka Blue Darters had the week off.
Wekiva 12, West Orange 9
The Wekiva Mustangs opened the season with a 24-12 win against Olympia High School but followed it with losses to Ocoee (13-6) and Lake Minneola (34-21).
It was time to get back into the win column - and win they did.
Fueled by stellar defense, a touchdown pass by quarterback Ty'Ray Davis in the second quarter, a Jamarian Robinson 25-yard TD run in the third period, the Mustangs took a 12-7 lead early and held on to defeat the West Orange Warriors 12-9.
Davis threw for 218 yards on the night.
Leading 12-9 late in the fourth quarter, safety Joshua Bennett intercepted a West Orange pass to seal the deal.
The win evens Wekiva's record on the season to 2-2. They host the Lake Brantley Patriots this Friday, who lost to Lake Mary 35-2 last week and are 1-3 on the season.
Apopka faces Edgewater in a battle of local undefeated powerhouses
After three straight victories and a bye week, the Apopka Blue Darters face off against perhaps their toughest opponent this Friday - the Edgewater Eagles. On the year, Edgewater is 4-0 after defeating Jones High School 31-14 last week.
The Blue Darters also stormed out of the early season gates with wins over Ocoee (2-0), West Orange (14-7), and a come-from-behind victory over Dr. Phillips 18-14.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Roger Williams Field on the campus of Apopka High School.
