Weather Alert: OCPS closing schools Wednesday and Thursday

The Orange County Public School District released the following statement to parents and students:

We have an update on Hurricane Ian as the district closely monitors storm activity. Due to the forecasted potential impact on Orange County, beginning Tuesday tomorrow, all after-school extracurricular activities are canceled except for extended day, which will be open until 6 p.m. Beginning on Wednesday, September 28, all schools and facilities will be closed, and extracurricular activities will be canceled through Thursday, September 29th. 

County emergency management personnel will host special needs and general population shelters in select schools. To see the list of shelters, please visit ocfl.net for more information. 

We will continue to update you throughout the storm. The district will send messages by phone, email, and text. Updates will also be posted on ocps.net and our district Facebook and Twitter pages regarding school operations.  

We will provide information about make-up days at a later time. To see the list of bad weather make-up days, you can click on the school calendar on ocps.net.

    One of the good things about living near the school is they keep the power grid going when other areas are down, and blacked out with no power. During the 2004 hurricanes, some didn't have power for over a month. You could drive around and hear the generators going. They used Apopka High as a hurricane shelter in the past, but I haven't heard anything about that this time. I think Lake County said their schools will close Wed., Thurs. and Friday.

    On tv, they pronounce Ian as E...an. I had been calling it I...an. Sure don't know how they get Ean out of Ian? LOL
