Bike to Work Day is an annual event across the United States and Canada that promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. National, regional, and local bicycle advocacy groups encourage people to try bicycle commuting as a healthy and safe alternative to driving by providing route information and tips for new bicycle commuters.
Bike to Work Day was originated by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956 and is a part of Bike to Work Week, which is in turn part of National Bike Month.
According to the league of American Bicyclists 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options. From 2000 to 2013, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent.
