The Apopka Youth Council: Making a difference in the community

Posted

A group of young people in Apopka is positively impacting their community by working with project managers to find ways to improve the area around them. This dedicated youth group has volunteered to organize various events to raise money for charities, provide support for the less fortunate, and help local businesses thrive.

These admirable actions genuinely reflect the importance of community service.

During the June 19th City Council Meeting, Special Project Manager Stephen Cribb spoke about the remarkable initiatives of the Apopka Youth Council. He highlighted some of the events and projects the council has undertaken, such as the Mobility Week Bike Event, Apopka Recycles Day, and the Celebrating Legends of Apopka project. The council members also raised nearly $1,500 to expand The Apopka Museum.

Formed in 2019 under the guidance of the city's Grant Administrator, Dr. Shakenya Harris-Jackson, the Apopka Youth Council has experienced substantial growth and development over the past year. The council's activities have significantly contributed to the betterment of the community.

Several members of the Youth Council shared insights into their personal growth and experiences. Breanne Procatio and Beatrice Salum spoke about the positive impact of their involvement and the valuable opportunities the council provided them.

Looking towards the future, the Youth Council is gearing up to participate in the Florida League of Cities Youth Council Summit in Deland this fall. This summit aims to equip the youth with the knowledge and skills required to impact their communities positively.
