Tales of dead toads, fishing poles, and first loves

Posted

My Daddy admonished me, “Boy, why don’t you act your age?”  And I said, “I don’t know, I ain’t  never been this age before!”

Beverly was perfect in every way. I was six or seven years old when I saw her the very first time and I was smitten to the core of my being. Pretty? I should say so!  I did everything I could think of to get her to like me. I threw snowballs at her, put a snake in her desk, and I even went so far as to wrap my favorite dead toad up real pretty in some used gift wrap at Christmas time and put it on her desk at school!

I mean who could resist such a wonderful gift?

But, somebody saw me put the mummified toad on her desk and told Mrs. Runkle, our first grade teacher, and boy did I ever get in trouble! I never could figure that one out, I mean who in their right mind wouldn’t like a dead toad, right?

Here I am crowding my 90th birthday and I still have never been able to figure out the female mind? Oh well, when a boy does goofy things I guess it is to be expected, but when a man does those same things folks look at it like it is darned foolishness!

Beverly was what I called my favorite fishing pole... as a tribute to my first great love.

Dear Holy, and wonderful God, I thank you so very much for your great love. You have always been there for me, even through my most failed attempts in love and loving. I thank you for my Darling wife, surely you have saved the best for last! Help each of us to love you and give you our very best.  In Jesus' Holy and wonderful name we ask this, Amen.

My Friend, I can only think you managed to dodge a bullet on this one! I mean any girl that can't or won't appreciate a gift-wrapped toad, is only going to lead to misery and heartbreak later on! First loves are important and I think you gave due and proper reverence to your first love by naming your favorite fishing pole after her! Q.E.D.!!!

Richard, one time, or so I am told; my mama caught me eating a nightcrawler. I don't remember what it tasted like, but I am glad my yearning for strange changed 'cause if it had stayed the same I might have married Beverly and my life would have been just a tad different Just saying Chaz
