The City of Apopka and CareerSource Central Florida are recruiting local businesses to provide free seasonal employment and job mentoring to high-schoolers enrolled in Apopka Youth Works.
The successful summer work program is expanding in its second year to accommodate 75 students for seven weeks of career education and on-site work experience beginning in June. Jobs are open to Apopka high-school juniors and seniors from moderate- to low-income families. For many, it is their first chance to work in a real-world business environment and try out their many talents.
Business participants get young and energetic summer workers at no cost. All that is needed is a safe and supervised workplace. The experience can help to prepare each student for a lifetime of work.

Returning businesses already signed up this year include the Coca-Cola Company, Bam B Enterprises / McDonald’s, LAN-on-Demand, Hope Community Center and Andrade & Vellon Law Firm.
Last year, CareerSource sponsored 20 of the students with $38,400 funded through the Workforce Investment Act. That federal program was completely updated in 2014 to provide $3 billion nationally for state and local work training programs for youth and adults. The City of Apopka sponsored 12 students for about $29,040.
This summer’s expanded program is open to 75 students. The combined contributions between the two agencies will be more than $180,000. Student applications are available now on the Apopka Youth Works website.
Apopka Youth Works includes a week-long training program - Workplace Essentials – to provide 24 hours of essential lessons such as how to write an effective résumé and cover letter, interview techniques, communication skills, conflict resolution, and professional workplace etiquette.
Students also participate in the United States Conference of Mayors’ DollarWise Campaign. DollarWise provides youth with financial literacy curricula targeting money management skills. By completing 5 online education modules, students are eligible to win Apple iPads and other prizes.
Students spend seven weeks at work. Participating businesses have the opportunity to hire students while the program provides the training and pay. Students earn at least $8.25 an hour for 30 hours a week during the summer.
