Southern Deli closing its doors

Saturday will be the popular restaurant's final day of operation

Posted
The Southern Deli opened its doors in June 2019 and quickly gained a reputation as one of Apopka's most popular restaurants. Now, in June 2024, it will unfortunately close its doors for the final time at the end of this month.

"We thought opening a restaurant was the hardest thing we’d ever do," read the statement on its Facebook page. "We were wrong. WE’RE CLOSING. Our lease is up at the end of this month and given the current market we’ve been unable to find a place that works. Between the spikes in food costs and rent, it doesn’t make sense for us to keep going. So many of you became our friends and then our family. We’re going to miss seeing you each week. Thank you for all the love, support, and memories. We will be here until Saturday."

The outpouring of emotion on social media for the Southern Deli by its patrons proved its popularity in the community.

"So sorry to hear this," said Teri Pangle. Thanks for the 5 great years you gave us. The best home-cooked food I have ever had. A big thumbs up to The Southern Deli. You will Definitely be missed."

Pangles's thoughts mirrored dozens of other comments. As of 5 p.m. on Monday, the post received 468 likes, 219 comments, and 74 shares.

On its website, the Southern Deli explained its reason for opening.

"Our vision was to create a menu that reminded you of your childhood - it includes our favorites, and they're made just the way we grew up eating them. The Southern Deli is not a traditional deli. We serve delicious southern fare, including sammiches made on homemade biscuits, cornbread, and freshly baked bread.  When you bite into one of our sammiches, we want it to stick to the roof of your mouth."

So long, Southern Deli. You will be sorely missed... especially around lunchtime.
