From The City of Apopka:
The Apopka Fire Department will host two popular summer camps in June and July for local kids ages 8 to 13.
Then the Fire and Police Departments will team up for a third camp in July for high school-age participants.
The first fire camp for ages 8 to 10 will be from June 27 to July 1 at the Leroy F. Gilliam Training Center, 321 E. Cleveland St. in Apopka. A mandatory orientation meeting will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17 at the training center.
The second fire camp for ages 11 to 13 will be from July 11 to 15 at the training center. The mandatory orientation meeting will be at 7 p.m. Friday, July 1, at the training center.
Both fire summer camps are tremendously popular and fill up quickly. Participants will work with Apopka firefighters to learn different aspects of fire and emergency medical services.
Topics include fire suppression, use of fire extinguishers, CPR and first aid, high-angle rescues, vehicle extractions and much more.

The third summer camp, the Youth Public Safety Academy is for local high students. Presented by Apopka’s Fire and Police departments July 18 to 28, also at the Leroy F. Gilliam Training Center. A mandatory orientation meeting will be at 7 p.m. Friday, July 15.
Experience the work of firefighters and police officers, learning aspects of police, fire and emergency medical services while participating discussions and hands-on exercises. Topics will include:
- Crime Scene Investigations
- Fire Suppression
- Collection
- Vehicle Extrications
- Search and Seizure
- Building Searches
- High-Angle Rescues
- Defensive Driving
- Traffic Laws
- Judicial Process
- Investigations
- K-9 (dogs in police activities)
Participants should have an interest in public safety and a commitment to successfully complete the academy. They also must be Apopka area students coming into the 9th through 12th grades.
