Playoff Week 1: 8-1 Mustangs, 7-3 Blue Darters begin their second seasons

Posted

The Apopka Blue Darters and Wekiva Mustangs took different routes to the postseason, but both teams find themselves in the playoffs once again.

The Blue Darters uncharacteristically lost three games this season when game-winning/tying drives stalled in the final minutes in all three clashes. However Apopka finished 7-3 and qualified as the #5 seed.

The Mustangs overcame an early season loss to Winter Park (an undefeated #1 seed) to finish the regular season 8-1, and roll to a district championship (their first in 8A-4), a 22-14 victory over crosstown rival Apopka (their first ever over the Blue Darters), a #2 seed in Region 8A-1, and a seven-game winning streak.

Both schools are five wins away from a state championship... and one loss away from ending their season. Welcome to the playoffs where records, momentum, rankings, and computer simulations mean nothing. The postseason has no memory or conscience. It's formula is simple...win and advance...lose and go home.

Apopka travels to Sanford; Wekiva opens at home

In the first round of Region 8A-1, the Apopka takes on Seminole High School in Sanford, while Wekiva hosts the Lake Mary Rams. Both games are on Friday, November 10th, and kickoff is at 7:30 PM in both.

The Blue Darters closed-out their regular season with a 44-12 victory over the Oak Ridge Pioneers. On Friday they face the 9-1 Seminoles, winners of District 8A-2 and the #4 seed in the region. The Seminoles defeated Bishop Moore 34-25 in their final regular season game, and are currently riding a three-game winning streak.

The Mustangs won their season finale 46-34 over Lake Nona, and faces a Lake Mary team that lost its last two games, but finished with a 7-3 record, and is the #7 seed in the region.

It is the 18th consecutive year the Blue Darters have made the playoffs, while the Mustangs return to the postseason for their second straight season.
