From the Orange County Media Relations Office
Neighbors and community groups help shape Orange County's quality of life and build more sustainable features. The Mayor's Neighborhood Challenge is part of a sustainability campaign under the Orange County's "Our Home for Life" Sustainability Plan.
Mayor Teresa Jacobs launched the first Mayor's Neighborhood Challenge in 2015, as a fun, free program to help residents and neighborhood groups join in friendly competition that can help their neighborhood thrive by becoming more healthy, green and involved.
"By challenging neighborhood organizations to become more involved in their community, committed to their health and invested in green practices, we can ensure a bright future for Orange County" - Mayor Teresa Jacobs
Three areas to compete:
Community Involvement
Green Practices
Healthy Neighborhoods
Levels of Achievement
The Challenge scorecards are intended to be used to assess the community’s organization’s sustainable practices as well as a resource for gathering new ideas. Once registered, participating organizations may update their scorecards at any time, with the goal of increasing their scores throughout the challenge year. The 2017 Mayor's Neighborhood Challenge will take place from March 15th through June 15th. Simply register and access each of the three scorecards. Once you have created an account and started completing a scorecard, you will have the opportunity to update regularly throughout the Challenge until midnight on June 15th. The Mayor's Neighborhood Challenge Award Ceremony will take place at the Orange County Community Conference on July 9th.
Whether you choose to compete in Green, Healthy, or Involved categories, the maximum score for each challenge is 118 points: 100 points for the basic challenge, and 18 possible additional points based on innovation, referring another neighborhoods who takes the challenge (does not have to be the same challenge category as your neighborhood), or extra credit for submitting photos with captions that can be used in the Challenge social media campaign. Each scorecard has four recognition levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). Any neighborhood is eligible for Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum awards at the following point levels:
