Orange County burn ban remains in effect

Posted

A burn ban prohibits the ignition and burning of open fires. We now have a burn ban in place for unincorporated Orange County, including the cities of Belle Isle and Edgewood and the towns of Eatonville and Oakland, for which Orange County provides fire services.
Under Orange County’s Fire Prevention and Protection Ordinance, burn bans automatically activate when the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), the reference scale created by the State of Florida that measures drought conditions, meets or exceeds 500. On March 31, 2020, the drought index reached 500.
The burn ban is in effect until the drought index dips below 500 KBDI for seven consecutive days, per county ordinance. Additional info and frequently asked questions can be found at www.ocfl.net/burnban

ORANGE COUNTY BURN BAN ORDINANCE

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners approved a burn ban ordinance in February 2018. The ordinance replaced the need for the Mayor to issue a declaration of emergency. A burn ban means that Orange County residents will not be able to have any open fires of any type, including campfires, bonfires, yards, trash burning, etc. There are some exemptions to this rule, including firework displays that are properly permitted, cooking on barbeque grills or pits as described in Section 18-7, Orange County Code, or any other valid state or county-authorized burn.

WHAT IS A BURN BAN?

When the local drought index meets or exceeds 500, Orange County automatically institutes a burn ban. The burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning that has not been specifically permitted. The ban is applicable within the unincorporated and incorporated territory of Orange County. However, municipalities within Orange County may provide notice of exclusion in writing to the Orange County Fire Marshal’s Office. Outdoor burning authorized by the Florida Forest Service is not affected by this ban.

HOW DO I KNOW THERE IS A BURN BAN IN EFFECT?

In the event that the drought index meets or exceeds 500, Orange County will announce the implementation of a Burn Ban through local news media, social media, and the Orange County website.

WHEN WILL A BURN BAN BE LIFTED?

A burn ban will automatically lift after the drought index falls below 500 for seven consecutive days. This announcement will be made by Orange County through local news media, social media, and the Orange County website.

WHAT CAN I DO TO KEEP MY FAMILY AND HOME SAFE?

Orange County Fire Rescue reminds citizens to take the following actions to protect their families and homes from fire danger:

  • Create at least 30 feet of “defensible” – meaning clean and green – space around your home.
  • Clear trash and dead vegetation from your front and backyards.
  • Remove leaves and debris from the roof and gutters.
  • Have a plan and an emergency kit packed in case an evacuation is ordered, especially if your home directly abuts wildlands.
  • Monitor local media for updates on road closures, smoke conditions, and other hazards.
  • Use extreme caution when grilling, camping, and discarding cigarettes.
  • Call 9-1-1 if you see a fire in your area.
  • Download the OCFL Alert app and sign up for OC Alert to stay abreast of rapidly-changing conditions and warnings for your area.

It is so hot and dry. If it doesn't rain soon, when it does start raining, I expect the sinkholes to start caving in. As I ride around, I see very large mature trees starting to die from a lack of water around businesses. Tall palms that have been there a long long time. The developers clearing out all the trees, the trees dying from lack of water, the constant burning of the forests by the state, and the pines dying from the beetles....it is awful.

I have been watching the Trump big show on TV. No handcuffs, no mug shot, and allowed to come back to NY at his own convenience. Would that happen to the common man? No way. How come they didn't bring the swat police to Mar-A- Lago in the middle of the night, and arrest him in his drawers, like they did Roger Stone? Yes, why didn't they? He shouldn't get any special favors. Lock him up! That is what he always wanted for Hillary. I read an article in the NY Post that said even if he was convicted, and sent to prison, he could still campaign for POTUS, and if elected while in prison, he could run our country as POTUS from behind the bars in prison. That is beyond ridiculous! The only thing that concerned them about an inmate pres was the briefcase that contains the nuclear football and codes.....yeah, oh dear me!
