"Get back to the people's work and not your individual political agendas"

- Charles Vavrek, Interim Apopka City Administrator

When the interim city administrator wrote these words to the Apopka City Commissioners in an email last month, he left out a few elements that may have played a more significant role in the attempted hiring of a city administrator and an economic development director.

A crucial aspect of effective governance lies in thorough vetting processes, especially when appointing key figures like the city administrator. Identifying potential concerns beforehand is essential to prevent issues that may hinder progress.

Instances where a candidate for the economic development director position declines after accepting are not uncommon in various spheres. We should look inward before casting blame, rather than pointing fingers at the commissioners.

The adage shared by a wise Nun holds true – before pointing the finger at others, one should examine their hand, noting that three fingers point back, prompting reflection on one's actions or inaction.

Another example of poor communication is the unfortunate shooting incident involving an 11-year-old Pop Warner player. When the Mayor met with Pop Warner and later when Apopka's own Jalen Carter held a check presentation at the Northwest Recreational Complex, it should have included city commissioners. Not informing them about the initial meeting and the ceremony shows the dysfunction of the Council.

In addressing the aftermath, the decision to fund off-duty Apopka police officers for Pop Warner activities, while tragic, should not be a financial burden on taxpayers. The responsibility should rest with the specific youth sports organization facing such security needs.

A focused effort from the mayor and commissioners can restore athletic fields to their former condition and rectify the disparities in youth sports field rental rates. The alarming discrepancies, which include Pop Warner paying $1.11/hour while Central Florida Soccer Club pays $98.00/hour, require urgent attention and correction.

Moreover, collective attention is needed to ensure the infrastructure - including roads, sidewalks, and schools, accommodates new developments without compromising safety and financial prudence. The embarrassing budget workshops underscore the importance of reliable budget software and transparent communication.

Effective governance necessitates two-way communication. To align commissioners and ensure cohesive leadership, timely and transparent communication is imperative. The Mayor and Commissioners must collaborate to move forward together, grounded in legal, moral, and ethical principles.

Let us all refocus on the people's work, acknowledging that progress can only be achieved through collaborative efforts, clear communication, and a shared commitment to the well-being of our community.
