Recent Wekiva High graduate honored during Hispanic Heritage Month

Luis Angel Rojas wins Youth Leadership Award

Posted

Each year since I took office in 2018, county commissioners have been asked to nominate a young person of Hispanic heritage from their district who exemplifies great character, service to the community, and shows a desire to lead. Orange County celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with many events, from displays of Hispanic Heritage Art to discussions regarding significant contributions from individuals of Hispanic descent.

On Thursday, October 27th, all the winners were celebrated at a colorful event filled with food and inspiring speeches at the Orange County Administration Center.

This year the winner of District 2 Hispanic Youth Leadership Award is Luis Angel Rojas of Apopka. He is a recent Class of 2022 Wekiva High School graduate. Luis is passionate about soccer and is a rising leader in his community.

During his high school tenure, he played varsity soccer while volunteering at the Hope CommUnity Center.  He is an active member of the Sin Frontera Youth group at the Hope CommUnity Center, where he has donated more than 200 hours of community service in just one-and-a-half years.

Luis was selected to become a Kids Camp Counselor at the Hope CommUnity Center to work with children ages five to 10. He mentors them and supports campers who come from disenfranchised and disadvantaged communities. Luis has begun his college career at Valencia College after being awarded a Hope Scholarship!  He is always willing to serve his community and encourage younger children to choose the best path forward.

As a special nod to all of the standout young people awarded this year with the Youth Leadership Award, they were honored in October during halftime of an Orlando Magic Game. In Orange County, Hispanic residents represent 33 percent of our 1.4 million population. Congratulations to Luis and continued success!
