From the HOPE CommUnity Center
With Hurricane Milton impacting Florida, Hope CommUnity Center shifted the focus of its October 12th event. Originally scheduled as “Meet In The Middle for Hope,” the event will now be a relief community effort called “Meet In The Middle For Relief” to meet the immediate needs of families during these difficult times.
Hope CommUnity Center, one of three resilience centers recognized by the Orange County Government, has been a pillar of support for Latino and immigrant families in Central Florida for over 50 years. With the anticipated severe impact of Hurricane Milton, particularly on those economically vulnerable and lacking access to government assistance, the organization is focused on delivering vital resources and relief.
We will distribute essential items and offer any additional support. Our focus is on relief, support, and solidarity in the aftermath of this storm. Additionally, we will continue to offer educational resources for the upcoming elections.
We ask our community to help us and join our efforts. We are collecting food, personal hygiene supplies, and financial contributions to provide immediate support to those most affected.
“We know from past storms like Irma and Ian that immigrant and Latino families are disproportionately impacted. Many of them are not eligible for FEMA aid, and their financial stability is fragile. Our mission is to ensure these families are supported during this critical time”, said Debo Ofsowitz, Development Director at Hope CommUnity Center.
When it is safe to do so, Hope staff plans to visit local vulnerable neighborhoods to assess damage and needs, gather data for advocacy, and invite community members to the relief event on October 12th.
