FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance provides funding for eligible activities that reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from future disasters. The application deadlines are approaching for both Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole. The deadline for Hurricane Ian is August 29th, and for Hurricane Nicole is October 20th.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management announced the availability of Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding for Hurricane Nicole. HMGP for Hurricane Ian was announced previously. • Deadline for application:  October 20, 2023 (Hurricane Nicole)

Hazard Mitigation Grant Program

The program is federally funded and administered by the state through the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Eligible applicants include state, local, and tribal government entities, and private non-profit organizations throughout the state of Florida that have an eligible mitigation project, regardless of where disaster damage has occurred. Eligible projects are those that will result in protection of public or private property from natural hazards. Examples include the acquisition or relocation of hazard-prone structures, elevation of flood-prone structures, stormwater management improvements, infrastructure protection, floodplain and stream restoration, generators for critical facilities, among other projects.

The process of selecting mitigation projects for funding consideration has been delegated to each county’s Local Mitigation Strategy Working Group (LMSWG). The application process begins at the county level. LMSWG determine which projects will be placed on their priority list and use this list to track and organize projects countywide to submit for HMGP funding consideration. To request that an eligible mitigation project be added to a county’s priority list, contact the relevant LMSWG.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) encourages potential applicants to apply through the FDEM Portal. Hardcopy applications may also be submitted to FDEM.
