UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current February classes/events are listed below and on its events calendar.

Water Bath Canning – Pickling (In Person)

Whether you are new to canning or simply looking for a refresher course, this workshop will help you select equipment and tools, teach food safety tips, and provide all of the steps needed to safely preserve food at home. Join our Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers in making a delicious pickled green bean recipe.

Blooms and Beyond: A Guided Garden Tour (In Person) 

Grab your gardening hat, sunglasses, and some comfy shoes and join Orange County Extension Agent Dr. Heather Kalaman for a guided tour through our Exploration Gardens! See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The tour includes an FFL book and pollinator seed packets. Kids 12 and under are free and encouraged to join!

Take Control of Your Money for Renters (Online)

Money management, renters’ rights, eviction prevention, and more! Offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez, this class is for residents looking for income-based assistance programs or anyone wanting to become a more savvy renter.

Crafting Your Florida Friendly Landscape – Free Webinar

This virtual class will cover the 9 Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles in detail. Join Orange County Extension Agent Dr. Heather Kalaman to learn more about how your landscape can be designed to look the way you want, fit the aesthetics of your community, be low maintenance, and support the overall well-being of Florida’s natural resources.

First Time Homebuyer Workshop – ENGLISH 2/8 & 2/15 (Online) 

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this 2-part class offered via Zoom in ENGLISH by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. The homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Bat House Building Workshop (Online) 

This class will go over a brief review of the bats of Florida and how to build a bat house that will hopefully attract bats in your area. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

Urban Backyard Chicken Class (Online)
Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Learn how to get started and be successful in this program presented via TEAMS by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

MED Instead of Meds – 6 Week Program (In Person) 

Interested in starting the Mediterranean Diet, but not sure where to start?Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers, the MED Instead of Meds series of classes will help you go MED by exploring simple steps to eating the MED way. Learn tips, life hacks, and recipes that will help you eat the MED way every day.  

Tuesdays: February 27; March 5, 12, 19, 26; April 2, 2024, 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Foodscape: Introduction to Creating a Florida-Friendly Edible Landscape (In Person)

This in person class will cover an introduction to landscape design using the 9 Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles and provide ideas on how to get started swapping invasive species in your yard for edible alternatives along with additional attractive edibles to consider. Join Orange County Extension Agent Clarissa Chairez to explore “Foodscaping” and learn what it’s all about. Fee includes 1 pH soil test. Kids 12 and under are free.

Garden Festival and Plant Sale (In Person) 

This free event includes plant, craft and food vendors, expert speakers on all things gardening, kids’ activities, and more! Master Gardener Volunteers will be available to diagnose plant issues. UF/IFAS Extension Orange County, 6021 S. Conway Road, Orlando. Service animals only.

Saturday March 2, 2024, from 8:30am to 3:00pm.
