Developing Story: Orange County rent control initiative halted

Posted

According to a post on Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore's District 2 Facebook page, an Orange County rent control ballot initiative was stopped by the 5th District Court of Appeals. The proposed initiative would have instituted a rent control policy for one year. The program had been cleared to appear on ballots on November 8th after the Orange County Commission voted 4-3 in favor. The ordinance was the target of two lawsuits, and the court determined the measure was misleading and violated state statute.

Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles encourages residents to submit their ballots still while results are being determined.

Mayor Jerry Demings and Moore voted against the ordinance.

"I'm not surprised," said Moore. "The worst part is that the county might be on the tab for the attorney's fees. The language in the 1977 state law was clear to me. Rent control was not a good remedy for our housing woes. Increasing the supply is."

Editor's Note: This is a developing story and will be updated as more details are known.

Sad, disappointing, but expected. The realtors and investors that contributed to the mess we’re in have paid large sums of money to ensure the working class don’t get the relief they deserve.
