Developing Story: City Council votes 3-2 to keep public comments off live feed

Posted

It's not just Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson's decision anymore.

At the September 4th City Council meeting, Commissioner Nick Nesta made a motion to restore public comments to the live feed during the regular meeting and broadcast them on the City's YouTube page as it has for years. Vice Mayor Diane Velazquez seconded the motion, but Commissioners Nadia Anderson and Alexander Smith joined Nelson in voting against it, defeating the motion 3-2.

For three straight meetings, public comments have been moved from the front to the back of the agenda, and the live feed has been turned off.

"Mayor, are you going to stop recording public comment again today, as well?" Nesta asked Nelson before the vote.

"Yes," Nelson said.

After the vote, Nesta asked Smith if he agreed with stopping recording public comments as part of the live feed.

"Yes, as long as the audio is still going," Smith said. "That's all that is required."

As an alternative to watching and listening to public comments in real-time on the City's YouTube live feed, the City is offering the option of requesting a copy of the audio of public comments through a public records request.

This breaking and developing story will be updated in future versions of The Apopka Voice.

Yesterday's Apopka City Council meeting was absolutely horrible, just when I thought it couldn't get much worse. I listened and watched the You Tube of it, and all that talk about the rate increases, and millage rate possible changes, and this and that, back and forth, between the council members and mainly Ms. Sherman, til I still don't what's what regarding the utility rates, the workshop dates, or even if they are going to have another workshop, or when the hearings are, because so much uncertainty about everything. That meeting was a mess! It was. It was circus and a half. No way should a meeting be ran like that. I think back to when Mayor John Land was in power, and how organized his meetings were. Boring, of course, maybe not the most transparent, but his meetings were not a circus, and people were civil, and if they weren't, they got gaveled or shown the door.

I think the public at yesterday's council meeting were actually, for the most part, civil, when they spoke, considering the rate increases you all are imposing on us, and the craziness regarding how the stopped meters are billed. Then at the end of the meeting, when Nesta wanted the city to hire that Tampa attorney to get a declaratory judgement from the court, to see if each council member is qualified according to state statues, and city charter. Hmmm.....this is almost like deja vu. Birds of a feather, do flock together, apparently. Yes, I heard that Tampa attorney's name before. Nesta's plot and ruse, IMO, against Commissioner Nada Anderson, but he does not have an opinion, so he says, just trying to TCB from emails from citizens, and put the subject "to bed and move on". Yeah, right, ha, ha. Stay strong Nada, stand your ground! What a snake pit, the city council has become..... and your moratorium, Nesta, will infringe on peoples' property rights to sell their properties FYI.

The only circus in the city of Apopka is Mayor Nelson's Leadership.

nesta you can hire an atty if you want but you have to listen to how stupid you sound asking the city to do it for you.

It will continue to be a circus if you keep listening to the peanut gallery snd take direction from them.
