City Council Summary (Presentations)

By Misha Corbett of Apopka Then and Now

9/11 Monument Presentation

13-year old Christian Lamphere shared preliminary design plans for the memorial that he plans to build for the City of Apopka. He is still raising money for this project, as the piece of the World Trade Center (WTC) received is much larger than he expected. The plan is to place the memorial on the lawn at City Hall, next to the time capsule. In the center will be the piece of the WTC, placed atop a pentagon shaped slab. This will be surrounded by flower beds, to represent the field in Pennsylvania where the plane went down. At each corner will be a plaque; one each to represent the Fire Department, the Police Officers, the Mayors (past and present), the Military Forces, and the main plaque, which will face due north. This memorial should be complete by September 11, 2016. Commissioner Velazquez pointed out an article that was published in a New York paper that confirmed that Hangar 17 at JFK Airport, also known as the graveyard where all of the wreckage from the WTC has been housed since 9/11, is now empty. Mrs. Velazquez feels Apopka is fortunate and honored to have received one of the very last remaining pieces of the WTC.

Copart Check Presentation

The clinic will be open from 4pm to 9pm on July 26 and July 28 at the Farm Workers Association Building on Apopka Blvd. The UCF College of Nursing will host a free clinic from 4pm to 9pm on July 26 and July 28 at the Farm Workers Association Building on Apopka Blvd.

Michael Carson, the National Property Manager of Copart, was present during the last meeting when the piece of the WTC was formally presented to Christian Lamphere. He was so moved by the presentation that he went back to the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Copart a contribution. The decision was made for Copart to donate $2,400.00 to Christian Lamphere for his Eagle Scout project. In addition, a donation of $1,000.00 was made to Troop 211 to use as they see fit. Mayor Joe Kilsheimer thanked Carson and stated, “Copart has demonstrated more than once that you guys are valuable members of our community. We look forward to when you guys get up and running here; the jobs that you are going to bring and the value that you are going to bring to Apopka.”

UCF College of Nursing Free Clinic Presentation

The UCF College of Nursing has had a presence in the City of Apopka for the past 18-years. They have been involved behind the scenes at the John Bridges Center, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, Lovell Elementary, and Quest to serve the community. A part of what Dr. Heather Peralta has taught at UCF for the past 3 years is that nurses are a part of a community. Usually, her group travels to the Dominican Republic to serve during the summer, but are unable to do so at this time due to the Zika virus. Instead, they have collaborated with the College of Medicine, College of Social Work, the College of Physical Therapy & the University of Florida College of Pharmacy to bring a free clinic to Apopka for the farm workers who are underserved and underrepresented.

They will bring Rheumatologist, Dermatologist, Internal Medicine, Well Woman, Pediatric, and more to provide healthcare for the uninsured farm workers.
