In September of 1957, Rock and Roll idol Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army and left the US for an eighteen month tour in Germany. A one last good bye kiss would be given to one lucky woman of the Women’s Army Corp which started a media circus. This moment is history has inspired the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie. Rock-and-roll singer, Conrad Birdie gets drafted to the army and its effect on a group of teenagers in a small town in Ohio.
Lake Brantley Drama will be performing Bye Bye Birdie on stage April 14th-17th.
Rock star Conrad Birdie is the biggest thing to top the charts. Women love him, men want to be him and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at the mere mention of his name. However, when Uncle Sam calls and the United States Army drafts Birdie; his manager Albert Peterson sees his meal ticket preparing to fly the coop. To the delight of Albert’s longtime love Rose Alvarez, she can’t wait for Albert to ditch the music biz and become something more respectable, like a High School English teacher. Desperate for a publicity stunt that’s big enough for them survive Birdie’s departure; Albert and Rose hatch a plan. They’ll send Conrad to small-town America to plant his goodbye kiss on one lucky fan for the entire world to see.
Their selection of Conrad Birdie’s super fan Kim Macafee sends the wholesome town of Sweet Apple, Ohio into chaos. Kim’s boyfriend, Hugo, can’t take the humiliation of his lady love’s televised lip-lock. Rose can’t take another minute of Albert’s distracted ways. And the town of Sweet Apple can’t take its teens' riotous rebellion, inspired by the arrival of bad-boy Birdie.
Will Sweet Apple, Ohio ever be the same?
If you love Elvis, the 50s step back in time to 1957 and come see Bye Bye Birdie.
