1) Decide what you want to do

Before doing anything, sit down with a cuppa (meaning, a 'cup of tea' for you Americans), pen and paper and think of what it is you want from this next excursion.  Are you going alone, is it best to go with someone, or perhaps even your family? You should consider what time of the year you want to go and for how long you are planning to go.

2) Research on the destination

Once you have found your destination of choice, it is time to do some research on what that country offers. Read books, watch videos, and talk to people who have already gone there.

Giving you more of an idea of what you can expect, when you get there.  Don’t trust everything you see in brochures and magazines; some info may be outdated. It would be best for you to try and get in touch with someone on the other side, doing research on the internet or even work through a traveling agency, that will give you the latest news and trends.

3) Travel according to your pocket

It's no secret that traveling isn't always cheap. If you're in the position of a company transferring you, you are set. Making a budget is still an essential part of preparing for this new adventure. With careful planning, and preparation, an awesome trip abroad won’t break your wallet.

4) Get the necessary paperwork

If you’re traveling internationally, make sure to look up what type of visa is required for your destination and how long it will take to obtain it. There are also often other documents that need to be obtained depending on the reason for travel, such as medical certificates of proof of income.

5) Plan out your itinerary

Whether you're planning a backpacking trip or a luxury holiday, having an itinerary can help keep you organized and ensure that you don't miss out on any must-see attractions. Some things to consider include places you want to visit, activities you want to try, mode of transportation between cities, and accommodation costs.

6) All in place, ready to move

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, you may want to consider hiring professionals to help you ensure that everything is in place and ready. This may involve booking flights and lodging, obtaining a visa, opening a bank account, or advising on job opportunities. Having a new job in a new country or state can be nerve-racking, so also can a trip just around the world be if you’re not ready, so take your time. Ultimately, you need to get the most out of whatever this venture is and where it’s taking you.

Being prepared and understanding what to anticipate and where you’re going makes the transition and travel much simpler and more enjoyable.  Investigate your destination, create a budget, gather the necessary paperwork, map out your itinerary, and plan accordingly. Prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will last a lifetime.
