From Florida Hospital
In Florida it can be tough to stay active outdoors, especially during the hottest summer months. But outdoor physical activities can be one of the best ways to stay active and heart healthy while enjoying a variety of activities. Whether you decide to take a walk or jog, or jump on your bike for a spin around the neighborhood, or local biking trail, it is important to stay active but most importantly stay safe in the Florida heat.
According to the American Heart Association, by following a few tips, you can start your outdoor adventure and get keep your heart healthy all year long.
Stay Hydrated- Drink up! Make sure to drink a few cups of water before, during and after you exercise.
Dress for Exercise Success- Pick lightweight clothing in breathable fabrics. Always pick light colors, and wear a hat and sunglasses.
Put on the Breaks- Take regular breaks in a shady or cool place. If you are feeling overheated, stop for a few minutes, drink some water and then start again.
Chose Your Time Wisely- The hottest time of the day is typically from noon to 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. Avoid these times if possible and pick a cooler time of the day for exercise.
And if the heat gets to be too much to take, make a splash in the pool! Exercising in the pool can help to improve cardiovascular fitness, and the warm water can even improve circulation. So jump in and get moving! Water aerobics can help burn calories, tone muscles, increase flexibility and keep you heart healthy.
