Austin Duran's legacy lives on

Fallen firefighter honored with Service Hero street sign

Posted

Austin Duran taught Apopka a lot in his short career as a firefighter and inspired us beyond all expectations in his tragic death. His dedication and sacrifice left a lasting impact.

Duran's commitment to service and his death in the line of duty led to the decision to name a street in his honor, recognizing his contributions and the ultimate price he paid. Fifth Street in Apopka was formally dedicated to Duran and his family.

Many from the community, along with fellow firefighters, joined Dr. Phyllis Olmstead, the event organizer and members of the VFW, to present the honor to the Duran family -Austin’s mother, Gail, his father, Michael, and his sister, Sierra.

With posthumous recognition as the 2022 Firefighter of the Year by the Apopka Fire Department, Duran's exceptional qualities and dedication showcase the respect and admiration he garnered from his colleagues and the community. The decision to name a street after Austin Duran is a further testament to his unwavering commitment to serving others, ensuring that his memory lives on in the heart of Apopka for generations to come.

The street dedication event on March 9th was a symbolic gesture and a tangible display of gratitude and remembrance of Duran's service and sacrifice. It serves as a poignant reminder of the risks that first responders undertake daily to ensure the safety and well-being of their community. The event is a reflection of the unity and support within the Apopka community, coming together to honor a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Commissioner Diane Velazquez expressed her profound appreciation for Duran's sacrifice on social media.

"Firefighter Austin Duran's life & legacy … NEVER Forgotten. Forever in our hearts."

Austin's father, Michael Duran, also appreciated the community's outpouring of support.

"From my family to Apopka residents and firefighters, near and far, thank you so much for your love and support for our son, FF Austin Duran."

The turnout was incredible," said Olmstead. "It was a beautiful day."
