AHA-Players Hold Auditions for Driving Miss Daisy

After an unfortunate turn of events for The AHA-Players in January, the theatrical group had to cancel all performances of their production Lombardi. They hope to bring the production back to the stage at a later date. Due to illness of one of the leading actors, unfortunately the show just couldn’t go on for the AHA Players, after months of hard work preparing for the show, and anticipation of supporters of the event.

Fortunately, spring brings a new opportunity for the thespians and for theater goers who appreciate live performance. Driving Miss Daisy is scheduled for production in April.

The AHA Players-Apopka Community Theatre will hold auditions for their next Main Stage production, Driving Miss Daisy, the Pulitzer prize-winning play about the relationship of an elderly white Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her black chauffeur, Hoke Colburn. The performance is scheduled for April 15 0 24, 2016.

Audition Dates: Monday, February 22 & Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 7 PM

Audition Location: Fran Carlton Recreation Center 11 North Forest Avenue, Apopka, 32703

  • DAISY WERTHAN: Female, Caucasian, age 72-97. A retired school teacher, wealthy patrician, navigating the challenges of aging.
  • HOKE COLBURN: Male, African-American, age 60-85. Chauffeur, illiterate, principled, dignified.
  • BOOLIE WERTHAN: Male, Caucasian, age 40-65. Daisy’s son, a successful businessman, dealing with both his aging mother and racial/cultural dynamics.

Jim Meadows shared, of talent requirements, “Talent over experience is considered so those new to the theater are encouraged to audition. The actors portraying Miss Daisy and Hoke do not necessarily have to be elderly, but should be in the middle-age range or beyond. No preparation for the audition is necessary. Those auditioning will read from the script.”

Performance dates for Driving Miss Daisy are April 15 – 24, 2016. Fridays & Saturday shows will be at 8 PM and Sundays performances at 2 PM. Performances will be held at the Apopka Community Center located at 519 South Central Avenue, Apopka, FL 32704.

Additional volunteers are needed. Anyone wishing to work on the production in an offstage capacity (lights, sound, set building, painting, ushering, costuming, etc.) is welcome to contact the theater by calling 407-369-9983, send an email to jim.meadows@apopkacommunitytheatre.org.
