A mother's love

Posted

Many years have passed since that fateful day... yes, many years, but the memory is still there.

The man, we will call him Mr. Camel, left his workplace and started to drive home.

At about the same time, the young wife and mother of four loaded her six-year-old son into her car and headed home.

The traffic was light, and the road was dry. She had made the drive many times before, so she didn’t expect this trip to be any different.

As Mr. Camel proceeded down the road, he saw ahead of him the flashing neon sign that signaled his favorite watering hole, and, quite suddenly, an insatiable thirst came over him, and almost as if his car had a mind of its own, it turned into the parking lot of the bar and parked.

Soon, Mr. Camel was sitting at the bar with the first of several beers in front of him.

Time and miles passed as the young mother proceeded toward home.

Due to a combination of circumstances, the accident could almost have been predicted. An innocent young mother and a drunk driver. Yes, almost predicted.

The first driver to arrive at the scene was a young man. He checked Mr. Camel first and saw that he was not badly injured and then proceeded to the young mother’s car. Keeping in mind that this was in the time prior to seat belts, he noted that she was slumped over the steering wheel.

He then forced the driver’s door open, and reaching in, he gently pulled the lady back against her seat.  At this, she spoke these few words, “My baby, please save my baby!” At which she relaxed… and died.

I am sure you will agree years pass, but memories never do.

The young mother was my wife and the mother of my children.

Her last thoughts on this earth were for the well-being of one of her children, and so is a mother’s love.
