A "Breaking News" kind of a day in Apopka

Apopka Police Department responds to bank robbery and emergency plane landing on Wednesday

Posted

Breaking news is a label that broadcast media often overuse to describe anything it wants to draw attention to. The Apopka Voice uses the breaking news label sparingly and when something is truly important and timely.

Wednesday was one of those "breaking news" kind of days in Apopka.

It started off when a single-engine Piper PA-32 experienced wing damage and engine issues over the blue skies of our city at approximately 11:30 am and performed an emergency landing between the Amazon Warehouse and the Goya Foods Building near the intersection of Shelby Industrial Drive and General Electric Road. The pilot was able to land safely, and neither he nor the passenger were injured.

The Apopka Police Department released the following statement about the emergency landing:

"On May 8th at 11:30 am, the Apopka Police Department responded to 3000 Shelby Industrial Drive regarding a report of an Airplane crash.

The plane reportedly sustained wing damage in flight and made an emergency landing at this location. Two passengers were onboard, but no injuries were reported."

According to Sgt. Kimberly Walsh of the APD, The Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified but declined to respond to the scene of the emergency landing.

Then, just a little over an hour later, officers from the APD responded to a bank robbery on Rock Springs Road.

The APD released the following statement:

"At approximately 12:40 pm, Apopka Police Officers responded to a Bank Robbery at the Fifth Third Bank, located at 1495 Rock Springs Road.

The suspect (pictured below) entered the bank, walked behind the teller counter, and removed money from an open drawer before fleeing the scene on foot.

No injuries resulted from this incident.

This continues to be an active investigation, and members of the APD Criminal Investigations Unit are actively working to gather additional information

Breaking news can be exciting and usually attracts more readers, but unfortunately, it usually comes with pain, suffering, and fatalities. Apopkans can be thankful no one was injured in these two events.
