Emancipation Day Celebration
Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States. It marks the day when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared that all slaves in Confederate territory were to be set free.
However, the Emancipation Proclamation did not actually free all slaves, as it only applied to those in Confederate territory who were in rebellion against the Union. It was a significant step towards the abolition of slavery, and it paved the way for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which officially ended slavery in the United States.
Emancipation Day is an important reminder of the struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. It is a time to reflect on the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done. Many communities celebrate Emancipation Day with parades, festivals, and other events that showcase African American culture and history and highlight the contributions that African Americans have made to American society.
In Apopka, Mayor Bryan Nelson and the City are excited to announce its 2nd Annual Emancipation Celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, May 18th, at Alonzo Williams Park from 9 AM to 1 PM. It will commemorate Florida’s Emancipation, which was proclaimed on May 20, 1865, in Tallahassee, Florida, by celebrating freedom while honoring the rich contributions of African-Americans to the Apopka community and beyond.
The day will kick off at 9 AM with special remarks and a proclamation read by Mayor Nelson, setting the tone for the celebration. The entertainment lineup includes live music by DJ EMCEE, soulful performances by vocalists Carmen Harrell and Mark Wright, captivating local dances, and a historical presentation by Ms. Francina Boykin, Vice President of the Apopka Historical Society. For our young guests, we have a bounce house and face painting, ensuring a fun-filled day for everyone.
