I can identify with this. I am on the brink of homelessness as my Social Security income does not cover housing & living needs. Last night, on social media, there was talk about affordable housing coming to Apopka. Immediately someone wrote that the criminals were on their way. Not everyone can afford the $400,000-600,000 houses being built all around Apopka. The average rent for affordable housing in the Apopka area is $1400 a month! That's way more than my SS income! So where am I supposed to live? I haven't heard about any low-income housing being built. I have spent hours & hours & hours the past 5 months trying to find out where there is help for senior citizens with low incomes. Calling 211, supposedly the place with answers, was of no help. All they did was give me other numbers to call or organizations to contact---all who gave me yet more organizations to contact! Orange County does not have a place to go for assistance. My SS allows me to pay my lot rent, my utilities, my insurance but does not allow for food (I get $25 week in food stamps), gas & upkeep on my car, prescriptions, cleaning products, paper products, toiletries, medical care above my insurance, clothing, etc...the list goes on. I did manage to make the cut when the last portal for low-income housing opened up. I was happy about that until I received a letter stating that interviews for low-income housing would begin in 3-5 YEARS!!! When I tried to see if there was help for repairs on my mobile home, I discovered that Orange County discriminates against residents in mobile homes! There is no help for us. There is no hope for low-income people especially senior citizens! So stories like this one presented ring so true with so many of Orange County residents!
