Orlando Philharmonic offers tribute concert for victims

Posted

The Orlando Philharmonic's concert on Monday will serve as a tribute to Christina Grimmie and to the Pulse victims and families.

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra's opening night of its five-concert Sounds of Summer Series, will take place at 7 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2016 at The Plaza Live. This concert will serve as a tribute to Christina Grimmie and to the victims and families of those involved in the tragic events at The Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.

This Philharmonic concert is presented by Principal Percussionist John Patton. The repertoire features Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale), which tells the story of Joseph, a soldier returning home on leave, and his encounters with the devil along the way. Included in this concert is Kevin Puts' And Legions Will Rise, which Puts describes as representing, "the power in all of us to transcend during times of tragedy and personal crisis."

The overarching "Heroes and Villains" theme of the concert demonstrates that music can overcome adversity and tragedy; the musicians will serve as the heroes who rise above evil in this special concert.

Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan will provide opening remarks and a dedication to the victims of violence. Incoming Board President RK Kelley will join Sheehan as part of this tribute. "The Orlando Philharmonic is proud to present this special opening concert of our Sounds of Summer series with its poignant message of music bringing power and healing. We are honored to have Commissioner Sheehan presiding over this concert and salute and congratulate her work and effort during this unprecedented crisis" said Kelley.
