Wild and Healthy: UF/IFAS rolls out October courses for Apopka

UF / IFAS Extension has a fall lineup of classes for the community ranging from wildflowers to meditation, native trees to healthy cooking and more. These October courses are designed with Apopka and Orange County residents in mind. If you don't find something to your liking right away, keep scrolling down - it's sure to be on the list.

Courses, Series, Dates and Details

Basics of Plant Identification (Online): Oct. 4

Learn the basic concepts of plant anatomy and keying so you’ll be a little less lost in the woods during your next botanical adventure. Presented via Zoom by John Roberts, Orange County Extension Agent.

Wildflower Seed Planting Workshop: In-person event: Oct. 5

Come to our demonstration gardens for this hands-on workshop presented by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent, on how to plant seeds and select the best species of wildflowers for your backyard. Participants who attend will receive a pack of seeds that includes native and nonnative wildflowers for Central Florida.

Healthy for Life: Cooking Skills Series -Snack Smarter (Online): Oct. 6

Join us to learn about better healthy snacks and helpful habits such as mindful eating!

Presented via Zoom by Vigi Zabala, Orange County Extension Agent, this class will increase your kitchen skills, nutrition know-how, and encourage you to adopt healthier habits.

Wildflower Seed Planting Workshop (Online): Oct. 7

Join our virtual workshop presented by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent, to learn how to plant seeds and select the best species of wildflowers for your backyard. SPANISH - First Time Homebuyer Workshop 10/7 & 10/8 Sessions 1 & 2 (Online): Oct. 7 & 8

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this online class offered via Zoom in SPANISH by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. The homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Native Trees of Central Florida (Online): Oct. 8

Guided Garden Tour: In-person Event: Oct. 12

Come for a guided tour of our Exploration Gardens at the Orange County Extension Center. See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and get ideas for your landscape. You will learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

Beekeeping 201 (Online): Oct. 15

Come learn about the awesome hobby of beekeeping! True first-time beekeepers are encouraged, but not required, to attend Beekeeping 101 before this class.

Beekeeping 201L (In Person): Oct. 16

Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough is presenting a hands-on, follow up to Beekeeping 201* at the UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County in Sanford. You will learn how to light a smoker, choose the proper PPE for you, go through a routine hive inspection, do a varroa shake and more! *Completion of Beekeeping 201 is required prior to taking this class.
