Tropical System targets Florida

Posted

The National Hurricane Center says a tropical wave located near Guadeloupe could become a tropical depression during the next day or two.

Invest 99-L could become a tropical depression or a tropical storm later this week while the system moves towards Florida.

Tropical Depression Invest 99-L 0824 500"Invest" is short for Investigation. The terminology is used by the National Hurricane Center to identify features they are monitoring for potential future development into a tropical depression or a tropical storm.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate this disturbance later today, if necessary.

People living on the islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea to the Bahamas are being advised to monitor the progress of this system. Gusty winds, heavy rains, and possible flash floods and mudslides could occur over portions of these areas regardless of tropical cyclone formation.

The National Hurricane Center estimates the probability of Invest 99-L becoming a tropical depression or storm within the next 48 hours at 50 percent. The odds of tropical formation within 5 days is 70%.

The next update from the National Hurricane Center will be issued at 5:00 PM EDT.
