The Top 4 Solutions for Completely Soundproofing a Room

By Allen Brown

There are rooms in your house that you'd like to just soundproof. This can be for various reasons, though frequently revolves around privacy. That's where you need the right soundproofing solutions for that particular room.

There are several solutions that you can utilize for soundproofing, but not all are an ideal fit. It's often the case that you want to soundproof the rooms nearest to your neighbor's house or the one that faces a busy street. Here are some of the top solutions when it comes to entirely soundproofing your desired room.

1. Seal the Gap Under the Door

Whether you're looking to soundproof a room because it's your home office or it's your bedroom, you need to seal the gap. You may not have thought about it, but sound can travel through that gap. That means you could be part of every conversation out there.

If you want to avoid hearing the TV or the lively conversations going on in other rooms, you have to seal those areas. One idea is to utilize some worn-out clothes you no longer use to cover that gap. Adhering a rubber sweep to the bottom of the door can also be a good solution, and something you can find at your local hardware store or online.

Whatever you use, it has to fit that space perfectly.

2. Upgrade the Door

Aside from trying to seal the space underneath the door, you can also upgrade the door itself. This is a good option if the door material itself easily allows sound to travel. Some common interior doors are often hollow-core ones.

Most hollow-core doors tend to allow sound to pass through as they are made of a thin outer layer of wood. The inside of it can be made of plastic or even cardboard, and this can make them noisier than solid wood doors. It would be best if you replaced these doors as soon as possible.

You need to have the hardwood doors installed if you don't want sound passing through. For the bottom of the door, it can be designed and fitted so that there isn't too much space there. But, if you have hardwood, it is unlikely that you'll hear noises much at all like you would with a thin layer door, or a door with gaps at the bottom.

Ensure that the designer fits the right door for your room and fits it well so that there isn't much space below. But again, if there's space left, see above on how you can seal it.

3. Soundproof Room Divider

You can also look to install soundproof room dividers when you want quiet in the room. You'll need to find the best soundproof room dividers that really work for you as not all of them will give you the value for your money.

Before you make any purchase for a soundproof room divider, consider a few important tips. At the very least, make sure you find one that has the best weight and right material for sound proofing.

  • Material – you need to get a feel of the divider before you make a choice. Make sure to feel for the one that has the most fibers in it. The ones with the most threads should be at the top of your list.
  • Next, ones that are made of suede can often be the best noise absorbers. It then has to be with an extra lining inside the divider. This will be an extra layer that sound has to go through.
  • Weight – the most straightforward idea in choosing the right divider is weight. Just go for the heavier one of the ones available. The heavier the divider, the more it can curb the noise as it can prevent sound reflection.

Bottom line, when choosing a divider, go for heavily insulated and dark.

4. Rearrange the Room

Soundproofing a room doesn't have to come with an expense. One way in which you can soundproof a room is by rearranging it. When you opt for this strategy, do it so that the furniture can absorb the noises of the house.

For example, you can have a heavy bookcase placed against a facing wall, or it can also be placed in the same position as the wall which backs the hallway. With the right arrangement, you won't have unnecessary sound hitting your ears as you complete tasks.

Soundproofing a room ultimately doesn't have to come at a cost. While there's one solution above that doesn't require any expenditure, the others aren't expensive or time-consuming. The good news is that you can utilize any of the above solutions at any time. Whichever idea you choose, ultimately any of these measures will help ensure that noise from outside doesn't come into the room.
