UF/IFAS hosts July classes on chickens, bees, homebuyers and more for Apopka, OC residents

UF / IFAS Extension meets the middle of summer with a strong menu of classes and programs for Apopka and Orange County residents. Kicking off July 15 with practical tips for irrigation solutions, they cover topics ranging from first time homebuyer certification to raising chickens, growing herbs and vegetables to Diabetes prevention. See details below.

Courses, Series, Dates and Details

July 15 - Basic Irrigation 101

Orange County Extension Agent Tia Silvasy will cover basic irrigation in this webinar. Learn to adjust your irrigation timer, make your irrigation system more efficient, and types of irrigation that conserve water. There is no charge for this Zoom webinar. If a donation is made, a rain gauge will be mailed to the participant.

July 16 - What's Killing My Lawn?

Learn some tips on how to keep your lawn alive and healthy in this workshop, presented by Dr. John Roberts, Orange County Extension Agent. Lush green lawns often do not happen on their own. In Florida, the environment can be very harsh, leading to many risks and perils to the standard turf yard. Join for a survey of the most common issues that can kill your turf. This class will be held as a Zoom Webinar.

July 16 & July 21 - First Time Homebuyer Workshop

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this online 2- part class. UF/IFAS Extension Orange County is a HUD-Approved Housing Counseling agency. The homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs. You must complete both sessions to receive the certificate of completion. Participants will be mailed a certificate of completion at the end of the workshop after all class requirements are met.

This virtual class is 2 sessions - July 16 & July 21, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, 4 hours each and offered via Zoom. The class link will be emailed upon registration.

July 17 - Adopt-A-Tree

Join the UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two trees and the trees may be planted on resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first come, first served basis and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 9B.

No pre-registration or fee to participate. Saturday, July 17, 2021, 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first. Questions: 407-254-9200.

July 17 - Basics of Vegetable Gardening in Central Florida

Presented virtually by Orange County Extension Agent Ed Thralls, you will learn the basics of Florida vegetable gardening including soil preparation, adjusting soil pH, fertilizing, irrigation, pests and diseases. Gardens may be grown year-round in Florida, but fall is the beginning of the vegetable gardening season.

July 17 - Bee 201L: Hitting the Hives (In-person portion)

This is the follow up hands on portion to the Beekeeping 201 class. *Before registering for this in person portion, please go through the Beekeeping 201 class prior to taking this class.* In this class you will get to see many of the things mentioned in the 201 class and more. You will:

Learn how to light a smoker; choose the proper PPE for you

Go through a routine hive inspection

Do a varroa shake and more

You will need to sign a waiver at the start of the class. They will have jackets and veils available to those without, but if you have your own PPE they encourage you to bring it.

July 21 - Backyard Chicken Class

Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough will be presenting on how to keep chickens and produce your own eggs in suburban and urban settings. Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

•Factors Affecting Egg Production in Backyard Chicken Flocks

July 22, 2021 through June 16, 2022 - Diabetes Prevention Program

Take charge of your life and register for this research-based lifestyle change program for preventing diabetes, presented via Zoom by Extension Agents Jana Anderson, Certified Personal Trainer, and Vigi Zabala, Registered Dietitian. In this program you will experience:

Group coaching sessions

Led by a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Personal Trainer

16 - Weekly sessions July through November 2021

5 - Biweekly meetings November 2021 through January 2022

5 - Monthly meetings February 2022 through June 2022

Program Qualifications

Must be 18 years or older and meets at least one of the following:

Diagnosed pre-diabetic

Hemoglobin A1C between 5.7 - 6.4

Family history of diabetes

History of Gestational Diabetes

Overweight

Thursdays, 11am-12pm from July 22, 2021 – June 16, 2022. Weekly sessions July - November. Biweekly meetings November - January 2022. Monthly meetings February 2022- June 2022.

July 29 - Growing Herbs in the Home Vegetable Garden

Learn about herbs that will grow successfully and when to plant them in the Central Florida garden in this virtual program presented by Orange County Extension Agent Ed Thralls. Herbs are plants which are grown for the special flavor and aroma of their various parts. They have been grown in backyard gardens for centuries and are used to season, enrich, or otherwise improve the taste or smell of certain foods.
