UF / IFAS Extension has their January selections ready to help you make a positive start to 2021. Classes range from beekeeping to diabetes prevention, succulent plant propagation to edible landscaping and more. Plus, the Apopka plant clinic re-opens to the public tomorrow, January 4.

JAN 6 - Beekeeping 101: Is Beekeeping for Me? (Online)

Come learn if beekeeping is for you! In this very beginner class presented via Zoom by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough, you'll learn about the important agricultural role honey bees play, how much it costs to get started, and the legality of keeping bees in your area. JAN 7 - Beekeeping 201: Beekeeping Basics (In-Person)

Join us to learn about the awesome hobby of beekeeping! Presented by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough, you will learn about a Langstroth hive, the colonies caste system, how to acquire bees and more! True first-time beekeepers are encouraged, but not required, to attend Beekeeping 101 before this class.

JAN 8 - Beekeeping 201L: Hitting the Hive (In Person)

Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough is presenting a hands-on, follow up to Beekeeping 201* at the UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County in Sanford. You will learn how to light a smoker, choose the proper PPE for you, go through a routine hive inspection, do a varroa shake and more! *Completion of Beekeeping 201 is required prior to taking this class.

 JAN 11 - Bat House Building Workshop (Online)

 JAN 11 - Succulent Plant Propagation (In-person)

This class will be a hands-on learning experience where you will learn how to propagate succulent plants. Presented by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent. Materials cost is included in the class fee, and you will receive pots and cuttings to start your own plant collection.

JAN 25 - Guided Garden Tour: In-person Event

Come for a guided tour of our Exploration Gardens at the Orange County Extension Center. See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and get ideas for your landscape. You will learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

Plant clinic in Apopka reopens

The plant clinic at the UF/IFAS Mid-Florida Research and Education Center will reopen to residents and resume taking horticultural business clientele on a walk-in basis starting January 4, 2022. The address is 2725 S. Binion Road, Apopka, FL 32703.

The residents’ plant clinic, which is staffed by volunteer Master Gardeners, will reopen to Central Florida residents with plant questions. The plant clinic will be open to walk-in appointments every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m..

The plant clinic will also reopen to horticultural business clientele on a walk-in basis. Over the last year, commercial customers had been asked to make appointments, but they will no longer be necessary. The plant clinic will be open to business customers every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..
