Raising Your Kids Well: Small But Significant Steps

Posted

By George Hyland

Raising children can often feel like a full time job in itself. The good news is that it will be the most rewarding work you do in your life. Of course, it can be difficult to know what to do at times. When you have kids, there isn’t a guidebook you’re handed on how to raise them well. Instead, it’s often a journey that you’ll have to figure out yourself. Obviously, the fewer mistakes you make along the way, the better, so, here are a few things you can do to give your little one the best upbringing you possibly can!

Providing a Good Education

We’re lucky enough to live in a time where education is easily accessible for the majority of children. It’s important to remember that education is one of the most important things to provide for your child. At a basic level, and in their early years of schooling, they will learn basic life skills that will help them to communicate and get along with day to day life - reading, writing, learning how to count and more. As they grow older, they’ll be able to select more specific subjects that they’re truly interested in and can excel at.

When it comes down to it, the better the education you can provide your child, the more opportunities that are open to them down the line. They could choose to follow a path into higher education, secure an internship or enter the workplace more easily. There are countless elements of a good education, including finding a good school. To help you do that, be sure to read exam results, as well as reviews from other parents and general performance reviews to get a good idea of how a school is performing. You can also help to educate your child at home, investing in books to read with them, or books for dyslexia should they need it. You can also prepare fun days out and activities, such as trips to museums, art galleries or arts and crafts days.

Providing a Healthy Lifestyle

You should also prioritize your little ones’ overall health and wellbeing. This means providing a healthy lifestyle for them. Let’s start with diet. Make sure that you’re providing them with their five a day, balanced meals and the right size portions. The guide below should give you a good idea of recommended calorie counts.

  • Children aged 2 to 8 - 1000 to 1400 calories
  • Girls aged 9 to 13 - 1400 to 1600 calories
  • Boys aged 9 to 13 - 1600 to 2000 calories

Make sure to also encourage them to exercise. Find an exercise or sport they might enjoy, such as dance, team sports, gymnastics, skating (with helmets), swimming and more. It may take a process of trial and error to find something they want to engage with regularly. But once you’ve found something they enjoy, you’ll be good to go!

These are just a few suggestions that will come in useful on this exciting journey. Hopefully, some of the information will benefit your little one!
