The City of Apopka is excited to announce the next steps in bringing a brand-new all-inclusive playground to the Northwest Recreation Complex. The project will include installation of new play structures, swings, slides, We Go-Rounds, ZipKrooz, a children’s play area, accessible pathways, a sensory garden, and additional enhancements, including new parking areas and a new exit roadway to Jason Dwelley Parkway. The existing playground will be closing November 18, 2024, with construction of the new playground beginning late January 2025. The new parking areas and exit roadway are planned to begin construction soon thereafter.
Achieving the project’s scope could not have been possible without the generous support from Unlimited Capabilities and the Halliday Foundation, who have donated funding and expertise to develop an inclusive playground that the Apopka community can take pride in. Unlimited Capabilities’ mission is, “…to provide members of our community with special needs or disabilities opportunities that foster independence and community connection by offering recreational activities, scholarships, and sponsorships.” This mission aligns with the inclusive playground project, as it will bring a new play space to the community for all to enjoy.
Unlimited Capabilities has committed $110,000 toward the project, with $100,000 of that donation coming from one of their long-time funding partners, the Halliday Foundation, and the other $10,000 coming from Unlimited Capabilities directly. The City is excited to see the project come to life in January.
Per the City, this new addition to the Northwest Recreation Complex is a testament to the their commitment to ensure public parks and recreation spaces meet the needs of everyone in the community, regardless of age and ability. This playground project was designed with principles of fairness, inclusion, independence, comfort, and safety, and the City of Apopka Parks and Recreation Department cannot wait to welcome families to enjoy this exceptional new play space in early 2025!
