Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer officially endorsed Nancy Robbinson, a long-time Orange County School Board Member, for Orange County School Board Chair at a press conference in front of City Hall on Wednesday.

“Nancy is the experienced leader we need representing the residents of Orange County as School Board Chair,” Mayor Dyer said. “Her years of service, from representing our community for the past 10 years as a School Board Member to serving on my Mayor’s Education Action Council, have prepared her to lead this educational charge for our children.”

Orange County is the only county in Florida that elects its chair in a countywide race. In addition to standard board member duties, the Orange County School Board Chair works with the superintendent to set board meeting agendas and acts as a tie-breaker on votes.

“Nancy is a tireless advocate for high-quality education and I am confident the school district will be in good hands with her at the helm,” Mayor Dyer said. “It is my honor to endorse Nancy Robbinson for Orange County School Board Chair.”

First elected to the Orange County School Board in 2008, Nancy Robbinson announced her candidacy for School Board Chair, the top elected role in the region’s largest school district, in November 2017.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

Robbinson is running against Matthew Fitzpatrick of Apopka and Robert Prater of Orlando.

Fitzpatrick is a former candidate for the District 7 Orange County Public School Board. He has been in education for 23 years—12 as a teacher, and 11 as an administrator. He worked at Apopka Memorial Middle School, Ocoee, Boone, and Apopka High Schools, Orange Technical College-Westside Campus in Winter Garden, and for two years as the District Athletic Director. Fitzpatrick ran for the OCPS District 7 School Board seat in 2016, placing second in a field of four, but eventually losing to incumbent Christine Moore in the general election runoff.

Prater is a resource teacher/leadership member at Oak Hill Elementary School.
