UF / IFAS Extension has Spring courses  ready to help you turn over a 'new leaf' in your life. Classes range from building a bathouse to learning how to make the most of your rental (and rent assistance), Florida-friendly landscaping, raising chickens and more. Plus, don't forget about the Apopka plant clinic to help answer any of your specific questions, too. 

Courses, series, dates and details

 APRIL 12 (Tuesday)- Bat House Building Workshop (Online)

This class will go over a brief review of the bats of Florida and how to build a bat house that will hopefully attract bats in your area. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

APRIL 12 (Tuesday) - Butterfly Plant Propagation (In Person)

Save money and learn to grow plants from seed, cutting, and division that attract will butterflies and pollinators! Attendees of our in-person class will get plant starts to take home. Presented by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent.

APRIL 13 & 27 (Wednesday) - RentWise (Online)

The RentWise program is designed to provide education and skills on renting as well as an opportunity for low-income residents to obtain rental assistance. Workshops require 5 hours of training, after which participants will receive a certificate of completion for an opportunity to apply and prequalify for rental assistance. Eligible Orange County residents may qualify for up to $3,000 in rental assistance.

APRIL 19 (Tuesday) Creating a Florida-Friendly Landscape (Online)

The Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program will help you make better decisions in your landscaping practices with tips to guide you in plant choice, irrigation practices, fertilizer applications and pest control. Join the webinar for free or pay $10 to get mailed our two Florida-Friendly Landscaping books and a rain gauge. This event is presented by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent and co-hosted by Orange County Utilities.

 APRIL 20 (Wednesday) - Backyard Chicken Class (Online)

Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Learn how to get started and be successful in this program presented via Zoom by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

APRIL 23 (Saturday) - Adopt-A-Tree    

Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at UF/IFAS Extension Orange County located at 6021 S. Conway Road for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two trees, and the trees may be planted on resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 9B.  

TIME: 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first.  No pre-registration or fee to participate. 407-254-9200.   

Plant clinic in Apopka 

Don't forget to visit the plant clinic at the UF/IFAS Mid-Florida Research and Education Center. The Center, staffed by volunteer Master Gardeners, is open to residents and takes horticultural business clientele on a walk-in basis. The address is 2725 S. Binion Road, Apopka, FL 32703.

The plant clinic is open to resident walk-in appointments every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and to business customers every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..
