Don’t Believe Everything You See On T.V.

A good rule to live by but especially in an election year

Posted

When I decided to run for the Florida House, I knew it wouldn’t be a walk in the park. Even still, the recent barrage of political attacks against me in voters’ mailboxes and on their T.V. screens have caught me by surprise. Not because I wasn’t expecting them, but because of my opponent's willingness to lie to win.

My opponent and his party have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into political ads — not to tell voters the truth — but instead to smear my good name for political gain. I may not have as much money to spend on ads as my opponent, but what I do have is the truth. So, before you vote, let me tell you in my own words who I am and why I’m running to represent you.

Who I Am

This experience has reminded me that I'm not a career politician; I’m a local business owner, wife, mother, and public servant who decided to make a greater investment in my community by running for elected office.

My story starts with my parents: two immigrants from the beautiful island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

My mom, who works in healthcare, taught me the importance of community and serving others. I’ve served our Central Florida community for many years including as a mentor with Seminole County’s “Take Stock in Children” program, a steward at my church, and the current Co-Chair of the Orange County Community Development Advisory Board.

Growing up, I watched my dad, an accountant and business owner, strive to fulfill the American Dream for his family. He instilled in me a deep love for my country and taught me the value of determination, diving into new opportunities, and working hard to succeed.

And that’s exactly what my husband and I did seven years ago when we started our own business, a staffing firm where we connect people to good-paying jobs right here at home. We have grown our business from the ground up and were honored by the Orlando Business Journal as one of the 50 fastest-growing companies in the region. I’ve spent my career powering our economy and creating jobs. I’m focused on doing the same in Tallahassee.

Why I’m Running

I decided to run for public office because I didn’t hear enough voices like mine in Tallahassee.

Not only do I understand what it means to run a business, grow the economy, and put more money into your pockets, but I’m also deeply committed to my community and to ensuring that we all have the opportunity to succeed.

One of the most urgent challenges we face is the rising cost of living, and the legislature has done next to nothing about it. Just this year they passed a bill that bailed out insurance companies using our tax dollars but did nothing to lower property insurance rates for homeowners. That’s unacceptable, and my first priority if elected will be to solve our housing affordability crisis and bring down the costs of basic goods like prescription drugs and the gas we put in our cars.

My son, Legacy, will be starting kindergarten in just a few years, and like his mom, I want him to graduate from a Florida Public School. I want our Apopka Blue Darters to get the funding they need so that our children don't attend classes that are overcrowded and underfunded. I want every child to have the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their fullest potential in life. But to do that, we need to fully fund our public education, keep politics out of the classroom, and pay our teachers the salary their profession deserves. It's time to empower parents, not politicians.

It’s also time for Tallahassee to start taking protecting our natural resources seriously. We choose to live in Central Florida in part because of the green spaces, lakes, rivers, and springs. Right here in the district, we have Wekiva State Park and the Wekiva River, and we have Lake Apopka and Rock Springs. These are incredible natural resources that must be respected and protected.

You Can Call Me… Seriously

These are just some of the issues I’m going to Tallahassee to address. To learn more about how I plan to lead in the legislature, visit www.TiffanyHughes.Vote. Or, better yet, give me a call on my cell phone: 407-840-8086. I’d love to get to know you and how I can address the challenges you and your family are facing. I’d also love for you to get to know the real me instead of the version my opponent is paying for you to know.

Thank you, God bless, and remember — don’t believe everything you see on T.V.

I voted for you! Doug Bankson is lousy and is not a good representation of his faith. Neither is the party that backs him. Thanks for all you do and hopefully continue to do when you’re elected!
