Despite inflation, Porkie's Original BBQ drops prices

Posted

In economics, inflation is a general increase in the prices of goods and services in an economy. When the general price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services; consequently, inflation corresponds to a reduction in the purchasing power of money.

The annual inflation rate for the United States is 8.3% for the 12 months ended April 2022 after rising 8.5% previously, according to U.S. Labor Department data published May 11th.

The next inflation update is scheduled for release on June 10 at 8:30 a.m. ET, but one Apopka business isn't waiting for the most current figures to take action.

"During this time of uncertainty and with all the Higher prices on everything. I have decided to go down in price on our Lunch Specials at Porkie's BBQ," said owner Steve White on his Facebook page.

Wait, Steve... you are supposed to raise your prices. Don't you understand inflationary economics?

"I am going back to the lower prices on our Specials so everyone can at least afford to eat out. Our specials start at $9.99 for a Sandwich, Two Sides, and a Drink. I am going to do this as long as I can. Thanks."

According to its website, Porkie's opened for business in 2003.

"White and his partner, Mike Kirby, traveled all over Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas searching for the perfect BBQ flavor. Returning home, they formulated a plan and a recipe for the best barbecue in the South. They took the best of what they had seen, tasted, and learned, put it all together with what they knew and loved, stirred it up, and Porkie’s was born in Apopka."

Porkie's was named the “Best BBQ in Central Florida,” and holds the longest-running Bike Night in Central Florida – every Thursday night. In Apopka, it is an institution.

White's post on Facebook received 313 likes, 69 comments, and 83 shares as of 6pm on Monday. The response was of surprise and appreciation.

"Your sense of spirit and love for your customers is amazing," said Jim Paulk.

"Thanks Steve, I really appreciate it...I'll be in this week," said Stuart Morrell.

"Apopka is lucky to have you and your business in it...Steve you are always there when anyone needs help...you are a good man...you are awesome and I'm glad to call you my friend...much love," said Vicki Flowers Pittman.

"Wow! That’s amazing, STEVE! Not only have food cost got up so dramatically, but labor costs, and all of our affiliated restaurant costs such as insurance, property taxes, and so forth. I hope this works out well for you! Kudos," said Boo McKinnon.

"You should be charging way more but thank you," said Brian Reddock.

So despite inflation, supply chain issues, and no lack of demand by hungry Apopka diners, Porkie's lowers its prices. Hmmm, maybe this is a trend other businesses could follow.
