Demings delivering $1.5 million check to Apopka for water tank

It was in November 2021 at the Golden Gem Landfill that Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson and Rep. Val Demings  (of the Florida 10th District that includes Apopka) to announce federal funding for a much needed water tank. Now, in the early morning hours of May 5th, Demings will deliver those funds.

Demings will present the City of Apopka with $1.5 million in federal funding for a new water storage tank. The funding, signed into law, was one of ten community projects specifically designated by Demings for federal funding last year and is critical to cover Apopka’s growing residential and commercial needs, especially during potential fire emergencies. 

“I am excited to announce that we have successfully secured funding for major investments to fund important police programs, combat homelessness, ensure clean and safe drinking water, and protect seniors during disasters," Demings said. "As Orlando’s former Chief of Police, I saw that our community was safer and better when we stood for accountability and opportunity for all. I brought this same attitude to these community project designations, which will fund next-generation body cameras for the Orlando Police Department and help give youth in our region new educational and career opportunities. Safe housing, drinking water, and streets should be a right for every Floridian, and I was proud to work with mayors and local partners to address these needs and deliver the highest quality of life for each member of our community.”

Demings successfully secured $1.5 million for the City of Apopka’s water infrastructure. Currently, the City has only a single water storage tank, and expected to soon outgrow its capacity leading to water shortage issues, especially during potential fire emergencies. Over $6 million is coming to Central Florida from Demings’ Community Project designations, in consultation with mayors and community partners in Florida’s 10^th District.

Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson was pleased with the effort Demings exhibited.

 “Congresswoman Demings contacted our office to find out what was needed in our community," he said. "Given the rapid growth in northwest Apopka, our greatest need is an additional water tank to store drinking water. Thanks to Congresswoman Demings, we have $1.5 million in the budget for a 1.5-million-gallon storage tank that will help serve our area for the next 20 years.”
