Breaking News Overnight: Apopka man seriously injured in construction site collision

Posted

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash in Orange County early this morning that resulted in serious injuries to an Apopka resident and one fatality.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 2:30 am, a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old Orlando man was traveling southbound on Narcoossee Road near the intersection of Emerson Lake Boulevard in Orlando. The area was an active construction zone. Traffic traveling southbound on Narcoossee Road had to temporarily travel in the left northbound lane and then back into the southbound lanes.

Two construction trucks were located at the beginning of the traffic shift. A fourth vehicle, a pickup truck was traveling northbound on Narcoossee Road at the same time as the first vehicle. There were also two pedestrians that were standing near the two construction vehicles, one a 48-year-old man from Apopka, who were later identified by the FHP as workers on the site.

The driver of the first vehicle failed to drive within the traffic shift and struck both construction vehicles. The two pedestrians were then struck, and the first vehicle was projected back into the rear of one of the construction vehicles but continued driving back into the northbound lanes and struck the northbound pickup.

The driver of the first vehicle then exited and fled into the marsh along the west shoulder of Narcoossee Road. Two Florida Agriculture officers were working off-duty for the construction company and located the driver and detained him. He was later transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

One of the pedestrians, a 35-year-old Ocoee man, was pronounced deceased on the scene. The Apopka man was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
