Apopka stops Daytona Beach Mainland 28-13; Wekiva blanks Lake Brantley 35-0
It was a contrasting year for the Apopka Blue Darters and Wekiva Mustangs in 2017.
For the Blue Darters, frustration and disappointment symbolized their 8-4 season. Despite a playoff victory over Seminole High School on the road in Sanford, what might be more remembered by a program the caliber of Apopka's are the four agonizing losses in which the Blue Darters had game-winning or game-tying drives stalled in the last minutes of those contests.
The Mustangs, on the other hand, enjoyed the best season in school history, finishing 2017 with a 12-2 record, which included a 10-game winning streak, a District 8A-4 title, a victory over Apopka and a trip to the state semifinals – all firsts for Wekiva.
But that was 2017. Ancient history. A million years ago.
This is 2018, and an entirely new chapter is about to be written for the Blue Darters and Mustangs.
The final dress rehearsal for both teams happened tonight as Apopka traveled to Daytona Stadium to take on the Daytona Beach Mainland Buccaneers. Apopka defeated the Buccaneers 28-13.
The Mustangs were also on the road at Tom Storey Field in Altamonte Springs to face the Lake Brantley Patriots. Wekiva shutout the Patriots 35-0.
It gets real next week, as the regular season begins Friday, August 24th when Apopka hosts Ocoee High School and Wekiva is at home against Jones High School.
