APOPKA, Fla. – City of Apopka firefighters are showing their funny side to join National Red Nose Day on Thursday, May 26, to benefit children around the world.

red noseFirefighters donned red noses while making a contribution to the charitable program, which has raised $1 billion globally over the past 25 years to help keep kids safe, healthy and educated. Half of the money supports kids in poverty across America – the rest goes to some of the world’s poorest areas in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Red Nose Day on Thursday encourages local communities to raise money and to have fun doing it. A live, two-hour television program with celebrities and entertainers will air at 9 a.m. Thursday on NBC. To donate, visit www.rednoseday.org.

Charity partners include Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Feeding America, National Urban League, Children’s Health Fund, Save the Children, National Council of La Raza and Covenant House.

The 2015 Red Nose Day raised $23 million to help children in 50 states and 15 countries. That money helped to provide some of 7.8 million meals, 200,000 kids received educational materials to learn to read, 50,000 kids and families were provided access to needed medical care. Another 30,000 families were provided with clean water and sanitation while 170,000 vaccines were administered to children.

Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign run by the non-profit organization Comic Relief Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) American public charity.
