Demings bests Hopkins to remain Orange County Sheriff
With 163 of 247 precincts reporting, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings won a big mandate by blasting challenger Spike Hopkins with 312,289 votes (66%) to Hopkins 163,981 votes (34%).
"I want to thank you for your support and it will be an honor to serve as your Sheriff for another term. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Orange County County Sheriff since 2008. As your Sheriff, I shall continue to provide the necessary expertise and continuing stability to provide proven and trusted leadership in the agency."
Sheriff Demings is a native of Orlando and the son of Freddie and Josephine Demings. He is the youngest of five children and has a twin brother. He is married to former Orlando Police Chief Valdez B. Demings who was appointed by Mayor Buddy Dyer in December 2007, as the first female Police Chief in the history of Orlando. Sheriff Demings was also appointed as Orlando’s first black police chief in 1998, which makes him and his wife national history makers. They have three sons, two of whom are also twins. Their sons are graduates of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee.
