Apopka advocate for gopher tortoises running for Orange County Soil and Water Conservation Supervisor

Posted

Kim Buchheit, an Apopka resident, land surveyor, and advocate for the protection of gopher tortoises, is running for office. Buchheit is the first candidate to file for the Orange County Soil and Water Conservation Supervisor, District 4 election.

There are five district supervisor positions that run countywide and at large.

According to its website, the Orange Soil & Water Conservation District was established in 1950 for the purpose of promoting and encouraging the wise use, management, and general conservation of the County’s soil, water, and related natural resources. The District is committed to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Orange County through the conservation of its natural resources. Soil and Water Conservation Districts are non-taxing and are supported by maintaining relationships and partnerships with other government agencies.

"As Florida's population continues to grow, it is essential that we work together to protect our valuable soil and water resources, sustain our fragile ecosystems, and understand how we are impacting human health and our quality of life through various growth-related activites," Buchheit said in a statement sent to The Apopka Voice. "At a time when state lawmakers are seeking to eliminate this vital role at the local level, I am well prepared to step forward to represent and assist the people of Orange County, ensuring that we have a voice in these important matters."

Buchheit has been vocal on Apopka issues. In October 2021,  she spoke during public comments in support of gopher tortoises. She also wrote an OP/ED for The Apopka Voice against the public comments Ordinance that recently failed to pass a City Council vote.

According to her statement, Buchheit is a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Florida and has been involved in Organic Farming at her property in Apopka for approximately 20 years. She is an advocate for the protection of natural resources since choosing to live, work, and play in Florida in the early 1980s.

I wish this lady the best in her run for office. She seems very dedicated, especially concerning the gopher tortoises. She got the peoples' choice award for her public comments at the City of Apopka, about the public comment policy they were going to change......( IMO, at least).....maybe even an Oscar, or an Emmy! LOL It's great to see people with a passion for something they care about. I noticed there is a display at the Orange County Library in Apopka showing the gopher tortoises, and facts about them. Check it out. One of the facts about them, shows the gophers have a so-called "built in GPS" in them, and can always find their way back home!!!

If all our elected officials could represent the good of the people and our planet like Kim Buchheit does, we would be in a better place. In all my travels, I have never known a greater person with exceptional abilities. Kim can be a voice that can stand up to special interest groups far beyond the position she is running for. I say, keep your eyes on this gal as she has what it takes to keep politicians accountable.
