Posted

Apopka's 2022 Election Day may be March 8th, but 1,640 vote-by-mail ballots have already been received as of Friday, February 18, by the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office (SOE) in the race for mayor, and two city commission seats. On February 2nd, 7,472 vote-by-mail ballots were sent to Apopka voters by the SOE, and after 16 days, 1,640 have been returned (102.5 ballots per day).

That is a faster pace than 2018 when Mayor Bryan Nelson faced then-Mayor Joe Kilsheimer, and 910 voters mailed ballots back in the first 15 days (60.66 ballots per day).

It is, however, still comparable to 2014, which pitted Kilsheimer against then-MayorJohn Land. In that election, 1,534 ballots were received in the first 15 days (102.26 ballots per day).

According to the SOE, 740 (45.12%) of the ballots received are from registered Republicans, 597 (36.4%) are from Democrats, and 303 (18.47%) are listed as independent, no party affiliation, or others.

In 2018, 2,575 (39.6%) Apopka voters used vote-by-mail ballots, while 3,856 (59.38%) voted on election day. Only 25 voters made the drive to Orlando to the SOE office to vote early, but with early voting at the VFW/Apopka Comunity Center in 2022, that figure is expected to increase significantly. In total, 6,492 voters participated in the 2018 election, which was a 20.7% turnout rate.
